A Terrible Surprise

Have you ever locked the key in your car? Have you ever lost your house key? Do you recall what it felt like to be locked out? Have you ever just missed a plane or a bus? Can you imagine the horror of expecting to get into heaven and finding out too late that you will forever be barred from that place? What a terrible surprise!

Matthew 7:21: Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Luke 13:25: When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are:

Some who reject Christ say that they intend to receive Him later. But each time they reject Him it gets easier. It becomes a habit they cannot break. God*s tug at their heart becomes easier to resist. Delaying obedience to God is already disobedience. Many have heard the Word of God but live as if they have not. Those who reject the Word of God also reject the God of the Word and they are headed for the terrible surprise.

John 12:48: He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

The Bible only records the comments of one man after he experienced the terrible surprise. It would be well for us to study his comments.

Luke 16:22-30: And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham*s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father*s house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
